Bicycle playing cards are more than just a deck; they're a piece of American culture. For over a century, they've been the go-to choice for magicians, cardists, and casual players alike. But with such a long history comes a fair share of myths and misconceptions.

In this article, we'll separate fact from fiction, exploring the true history of Bicycle cards and why they remain so iconic. Whether you're a seasoned collector or just curious about the brand, you'll find the real story here.

The Origins of Bicycle Cards

Bicycle playing cards have been around since the late 1800s, making them one of the oldest continuously produced card brands in the world. The iconic Rider Back design, introduced in the 1880s, has remained largely unchanged for over a century. This longevity is a testament to its timeless appeal.

The brand's association with the Bicycle Rider Backs is legendary. In fact, the design is so iconic that it's heavily protected, which is why you don't see many official variations. This protection has only added to the mystique and desirability of the cards.

Myth: Only NASA Has Altered the Rider Back Design

A common myth claims that in nearly 150 years, the only entity to modify the Bicycle Rider Back design is NASA, and that collaboration happened over 50 years ago. While it's true that NASA did work with Bicycle, this statement oversimplifies the brand's history.

In reality, Bicycle has released numerous special editions and collaborations over the years, each with unique back designs. While the core Rider Back remains protected, the brand has shown flexibility in creating new looks for specific audiences, from collectors to magicians.
